Working With User Folder Location When Installing a New Version of NYC

Some folks move the user folder in one version of NYC, then they install a new version of NYC and want to specify the same user folder for the new version.  This is disallowed by NYC because files in the user folder may need to be upgraded to work with the new version, and it is our policy not to tamper with existing user folders during upgrades.  Only by File… Upgrade… can you bring over and upgrade files from your previous user folder.  This requires a previous and a new user folder – you cannot upgrade files in place.  Thus, to maintain integrity of the new and old user folder, you can only use Tools… Options… User Folder tab to move the user folder to a new location – you cannot specify an existing folder as your user folder.

For those who want to keep the user folder somewhere other than in \user under your NYC folder, here is the suggested process to use each time you install a new version of NYC.

  1. Install the new version of NYC.  A new user folder is automatically installed as \user under your NYC folder.
  2. Run the new version of NYC and use File… Upgrade… to bring over/upgrade user files from your previous user folder.
  3. Then use Tools… Options… User Folder tab to move the user folder to where you want it.   If you want it where you had it previously, you must delete or rename your previous user folder, then specify the folder you want as your new user folder.

The key here is to understand that the Tools… Options… User Folder feature only lets you move the user folder to a new location – not to an existing folder.
